Screenwriting is some of the most lucrative and satisfying work you can get as a writer - if you can get it. To get a foot inside the door, you really need proper training. Good thing we're here to give it to you, eh?

We run screenwriting workshops in Oxford, run by the excellent Jon Spira. We think we can guarantee to make your day.

Course content

Our one-day course will give you a solid grounding in screenplay format, structure, tone and dialogue. You'll leave the course with enough knowledge to inspire you to start writing (or develop your writing, if you've already got started). All participants will receive a "£30 off" voucher to be used against a full-length WW editorial review.

The course will lay the groundwork for aspirant screenwriters by arming them with the issues that need to be considered before putting pen to paper... or finger to key. It deals principally with four interlocking concepts that form the bedrock of a solid screenplay:

THEME - The author's message
TONE - The 'feel' and style of the narrative
STRUCTURE - Observing and embracing the 3-act structure
PLOT - How to best tell your story

Using film clips, exercises, lecturing and foccused discussion, we'll get these notions working for the class so they never have to sit staring at a blank page/screen ever again.

Jon has incredible feedback from his students and these courses do book up - so get in touch with us as soon as possible to make your booking.

Course leader - Jon Spira (see feedback)

Jon teaches both the comprehensive course and the one-day workshop. He graduated from the Scottish Film School in Edinburgh in 1999 and has several year's experience as a professional screenwriter. He was a staff writer on cult Canadian sci-fi show LEXX, and went on to write for Thames TV and the BBC. He has written feature film scripts for Manga Live, Palm Pictures and several independents.

He has taught the UK Film Council Screenwriting course in Oxford since 2004, where he also owns a chain of independent DVD rental stores, an  independent DVD label, and a production company. He is currently directing his first feature film.

Location & transport

The course is held at the Oxford Union in central Oxford. You can get a Google Map of the location here. There are excellent bus, coach & rail connections to Oxford. If you want to come by car, then the Westgate car park has plenty of spaces and is close by - but it's relatively expensive. Alternatively, the city's Park & Ride scheme is cheaper, but needs you to allow a little more time for the bus ride in. More info from the every-helpful City Council here.

Cancellations

We can take cancellations for a full refund up to 22 days before the first session. Thereafter, no refunds - sorry. If we do need to cancel a course (which happens very seldom), then we will give at least 21 days notice.
