SAMPLE REPORTS

_________________________________________________________________

Because every book varies, our reports do too - we never try to impose a rigid format on you and your work. But to give you an idea of what your report might look like, we've posted some examples below. Please browse these.

The reports are all drawn from recent examples, with details changed to protect the authors' privacy. The reports are condensed for the web, but the original word count is given below.

Black Sun

A strong novel about dope smuggling in the Caribbean, with good commercial potential.

The novel was very close to being marketable, but still had various issues, notably in terms of narrative drive, which was present but still too patchy. The report focuses on the main outstanding issues and gives plenty of encouragement and direction for the next steps.

Original report:   3,900 words

A Curious Personage

A stunning literary novel about self-exploration

This was one of the most beautiful & poetic novels that the reviewer in question had come across for some time. But a book can be too highbrow - and this was. We felt that the author needed to concentrate much more on contemporary market requirements. We also found a number of ways to bring out its literary qualities too. The reviewer wrote a long report, hoping that the author would feel inspired to agree. She did and is currently working to revise the book in line with our commentary.

Original report:   4,400 words

Unquiet Night

A decent effort by a first time author.

The book is a thriller set in the world of the third world development racket. Like many first time efforts, the author needed help with various technical aspects of his work. The report covers the main topics, but with less finished work it's often the face-to-face meeting that proves to be most valuable. The writer left us very enthused and keen to take another crack at this novel.

We often supplement our main report with one or more detailed guides on a particular aspect of writing technique. We did this here.

Orginal report:   3,400 words, plus 800 word attachment
