Mark Billingham’s popular character, DI Tom Thorne is dragged back into a case that he thought was finalised, when two commuters are taken hostage in a train station newsagent’s. The demands of an Indian father are to know the truth of his son’s trial and sentencing, and his resulting death while in custody. A death that has officially been found to be suicide.
His promise to investigate what the father claims is murder, is initially made by Thorne to try and ensure the safety of the hostages, one who is a police officer. But it soon becomes his own quest for the truth, when he discovers a cover-up at all levels of the system.
As separate lines of the story knit together with the risks Thorne takes leading to a dramatic ending, the hostage crisis is brought to an end with life-changing consequences for all those involved.
A stunningly well-crafted book. I enjoyed this immensely and I’m sure you will too. Highly recommended.
