Non-Fiction at The Writers' Workshop

We handle most types of general non-fiction, including
travel, memoirs, bio-graphy, history, or anything else aimed at a general audience.

We have some stellar editors of non-fiction, and have a wonderful record in getting quality manuscripts placed with agents - and sold. We'd love to help you too. See below for what we offer - and if you need more, simply contact us.

Please note that although we can handle most Mind / Body / Spirit, and self-help books, there may be some religious work or other highly specialised books we won't have editors for. But if in doubt, please just ask.

In exchange for a one-off fee, we will:

Read your manuscript. Closely and with care. Your consultant will be highly skilled and experienced in the genre you are writing in, and will be familiar with market as well as stylistic requirements.

Prepare a full report. For book-length work, reports are usually around 3,000 words long, often longer. (For shorter work, reports may be less). Our report is tailored to your specific needs, and aims to tell you everything you need to know to take your manuscript to the next step. For more, see our sample report.

Discuss the report with you. Discussions are generally held by telephone, though some editors will be happy to hold face to face meetings instead. There is no set limit for these discussions - they go on as long as it takes to do it right.

Stay in touch. The report and phone discussion should cover 99% of everything you need to know - but if follow-up questions do arise, then we're happy to help. (Bear in mind though, that once you start correcting your MS, it's tough for us to advise until we've re-read it!)

Place your work with agents, where appropriate. Where work is of marketable quality, we will pass it, with our endorsement, to some of the leading literary agents in the UK. There are no guarantees in this game - but our record of placing work is second to none.

Today's publishing industry is competitive, crowded and commercial. Our principal aim is to help clients bring their work to the level required by today's market. But please be aware that this is not always feasible. We are good, but we're not magicians!

Keen to go ahead?

Working with us is very simple. All you need to do is send us your manuscript with payment, and we'll take it from there. For more on how to do this, please see Fees & How to Submit.

If you need more help or info, then please just contact us.

We also offer:

A second read option. We value our ongoing relationships. As part of this commitment, we offer a cut-price second read service, where the consultant will read your revised manuscript, and send you a summary of issues still needing work. This summary will form the basis of another intensive one on one discussion.

A short read option. Maybe you just want us to review the material you're sending out to agents - or maybe you've just started something and want advice before going further. Either way, we're more than happy to help. The fees for Short Reads are based off word count. For more info, please
see Fees & How to Submit.
