1. Courses & the like
Arvon: The best residential writing courses anywhere. And we don't only say that because half our editors are Arvonners too - we say that because both we and Arvon choose only the best.
Open University: Excellent distance learning courses (for distance learning courses, that is). Just search their site for creative writing.
London School of Journalism: Also excellent. Not just for journalists either.
University of East Anglia: Probably the most highly regarded creative writing courses in the country - certainly the courses with the most kudos.
Earworms Learning: One of the best ways of learning a foreign language.
2. Author websites
Mostly our editors, but some wildcard entries too. With our own editors, we've linked to personal websites, where they exist; otherwise just the most useful other material.
David Armstrong - do look out for his How Not to Publish a Novel; a useful corrective to the normal hype.
Keith Brooke / Infinityplus - the best scifi / fantasy / horror site anywhere.
Karen Connelly - plus she's got her own Wikipedia page; grand eh?
Ed Fenton / Day Books - Day Books is Ed's wonderful small publishing company which specialises in publishing diaries, collections of letters and the like. Small but mighty.

Aesthetica Magazine - A cultural arts publication with a zeitgeisty feel. Covers literature, visual arts, music, film and theatre.
BlueRectangle.com_(BookReviews) - BlueRectangle.com offers book reviews on video.
Concise and fascinating insights into a wide variety of books, by a wide
variety of book reviewers.
The British Council - Arts funding, competitions etc.
BBC Writers' Room - Script submission opportunities and tips.
The Crowood Press - books and DVDs for enthusiasts written and presented by experts in their fields.
DV Cafe - an enjoyable & idiosyncratic site all the way from snowy Canada
Duly Registered - an online copyright registration solution for musicians, writers, artists, designers, poets.
Frogmore Press - a classy poetry magazine which runs its own annual poetry competition
iWrite Assistant - a hosted web application designed for freelance writers. It allows you to keep track of the manuscripts you send out, keep publisher information and the contacts you deal with within those publishers.
Simon Haynes's Articles on Writing- Simon Haynes shares his thoughts on the writing game in a collection of excellent articles.
Kudos - a useful quarterly competition listing for short stories and poetry mainly, also good for reviews and contacts.
Mslexia Magazine - a quarterly magazine for women who write. One of the best sources around at the moment for ideas, contacts, submission opportunities and writing tips etc.
Nth Position - a poetry, fiction, arts reviews and discussion webzine edited by Todd Swift - one of our poetry editors here at Writers' Workshop
Peak Directory - a directory listing site, more useful than most because its entries are hand-selected.
Pen Pusher Magazine - a new paper copy magazine with a range of interesting articles. Not just about the newest, most trendy and commercial books either.
Pig of Happiness - life-coaching directed partly towards writers.
The Scrumbler - a great new poetry magazine for kids. Submission of poetry and illustrations encouraged from kids as well as adults. Selection process involved.
The Short Story Website - a great website championing the short story and everything about this under-appreciated form.
TalentTrove.com - an online talent community, created to help people share their talents with the world.
Untitled Books - a literary website and online bookshop publishing articles, interviews and reading recommendations from well known authors, as well as original short fiction from up and coming writers.
Write101.Com - Write101 offers detailed insights into the workings of the English language presented with just a touch of humour. Write101 has more than 800 pages of articles about all aspects of writing as well as a free online writing course, vocab quizzes, essay-writing tips for students and more.
Writer's Market UK - aims to help writers to find
markets for their work by offering a constantly updated comprehensive online
database of publishers, magazines, broadcast media and agents. Plus it has a
growing collection of in-depth articles by industry professionals on all
aspects of the writing and publishing process.
