The course is tailored to your specific writing needs and areas you want to develop. Some authors start only with an idea, others have already written several drafts

Daren King (view author website) has written since he was old enough to pick up a pen without putting it in his mouth. He is an award-winning English novelist. His debut novel, Boxy an Star, was shortlisted for the 1999 Guardian First Book Award and longlisted for the 1999 Booker Prize. His first children's novel, Mouse Noses on Toast, won first prize in the 6-8 age category of the Nestle Children's Book Prize.

His books have been published around the world, including Canada and the US, and have been translated into Italian, German and Russian.

“These notes are helping more than anything from university, self-help books, small courses; all of them put together even. Makes me believe even more that I was lucky to have got the chance to do this mentorship with you.” - David Graham Ward, Gateshead, England

“I signed up for Daren's course in the autumn of 2009 as I felt that, in order to go forward with my writing and give myself a fighting chance of one day producing something commercially viable, I needed outside help. I feel I have gained so much from working with him, and I am extremely grateful to have had the benefit of his patience and expertise.” - Jill Cowley, Washington DC, USA

“Daren ... guides you in a way that allows your idiosyncrasies full run. The joy for me has been ending up with a book that contains everything I set out to achieve and more, but at a quarter of the length it was when I first approached Daren.” - Richard Ruegg, Queensland, Australia

“I worked with Daren for about 10 months while I wrote my first novel. His feedback was direct and honest and I really valued his criticism. I miss working with him as I hadn’t realised how much he was a part of keeping the momentum going for me.” - Jo Carrington, North Somerset, England

Course Syllabus

* Several course handouts, outlining broad and little-known principles
and concepts, to get you started
* A course (perhaps better described as a mentoring service) tailored
to your needs: some authors start only with an idea, others have
already written several drafts
* Learn from one of Britain’s most versatile writers, an award-winning
author of both children’s and literary fiction, now dedicated to the
commercial thriller genre
* Detailed feedback on every chapter of every draft, with concepts
explained clearly, then improvement examples from your own work: learn
WHY your sentence doesn’t work, and see HOW to fix it
* When it comes to prose style, you will not find a writer with a more
detailed understanding of what can cause a sentence to fall apart or a
reader’s mind to wander – or what makes a sentence STRONG [can you put
that last word in bold or caps?] [or if you prefer replace it with two
or three words. ‘strong and zingy’!!!??? one way or another we need
that dash after ‘wander’ and real emphasis at the end; that negative
stuff is great to have in there because they will have a fear of NOT
KNOWING why their sentences sometimes feel week, or even not knowing
that a sentence IS weak! But we don’t want them to focus on that
negativityness]
* Discover concepts and principles that you will NOT learn elsewhere,
many of which Daren learnt through many years of experimentation and
editing, and eight years of working with the Writers’ Workshop
* Help with synopsis and letter to agents; in some cases we can take
to agents directly

• Interactive classroom discussion
• A writing exercise on the week's topic
• Feedback on your homework

All the course material can be accessed at any time of day or night. If you miss a few days, it will be easy to catch up. You are also warmly encouraged to interact with fellow-students - offer advice, give feedback and make friends. Find out more about how our courses work here.
